Sugar and mulling spice make everyone feel nice, especially when you try BigOven's Classic Sangria recipe with homemade mulling spices!
Source: BigOven original recipe
1. In a small saucepan over high heat, combine water and sugar. Add mulling spices and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until sugar is thoroughly dissolved, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
2. Strain the cooled mixture through a fine-meshed sieve and discard the mulling spice solids. Reserve ½ cup for this recipe and reserve the rest for later cocktails.
To assemble the Sangria:
1. Add fruit and brandy to a large pitcher and muddle with a large wooden spoon. Refrigerate for at least one hour, or ideally, overnight.
2. When ready to serve, add the wine and spiced simple syrup to the brandy-soaked fruit and stir to combine. Garnish with star anise and cinnamon sticks. Pour over ice-chilled wine glasses.
